| The weather wasn't that great, but it wasn't raining. There were clouds looming over the horizon that looked like trouble. The wind was completely absent; the water moved only from a giant system of ripples caused by the shifting tides. Even the boats were strangely silent. It was a ghost inlet, and it didn't look very inviting at first. But we were determined to test the waters. And test them we did. It started out promising enough. Amanda was behind the wheel, and all she needed to do was straighten us out and hit the gas just a bit. I was on the dock with the ropes, bringing the boat out of her cozy slip by myself with only a gentle kick at the end to point her on her way. It was amazing, quite possibly the best 'getting-out' of the slip I'd ever had. Come quite a long ways from the troubles Zach and I had on our first outing (a story that, unfortunately, is not documented here). As mentioned before, there was no wind. The sails wouldn't even have flapped; there was no breeze. All we did was motor around the side of our seaport town. Amanda took pictures, she called April Fool and they waved at us. We ate our sandwiches and started back. The clouds, the ominous ones, seemed to be floating closer. It was probably around that time that I realized that docking requires two people for two dramatically different jobs. 1. To leap from the boat as it docks, to catch the boat and tie our moorings. 2. To remain on the boat and make artistic use of the throttle and the rudder to guide the boat into the slip at a pace that makes the first job practical. One person can only do one of these jobs, unless there's a trick I don't as yet understand. So Amanda had to stay behind the wheel and turn when I gave the order. But I gave it far too late. Check out the slide show for the full story.
